The Journey of a Stone

A short story

View of the garden

Once upon a time when the Earth was very new the Earthlings awoke one day to a sky which was dark and a great silence laid upon the land. All the animals gathered in one area as if to gain comfort each from the other.

The Wise One listened to their cry for help and told them to sit quietly whilst he spoke with the Nature God. After a while he called them to sit with him and told them that The Lord of all Time was angry since they were not working to beautify this Earth which he had bestowed upon them, and warned them to prepare for the Great Storm which was soon to come upon them. At the same time from the fountain of his great wisdom he said: "It is writ within the Law that whenever the Lord of All Time is unhappy with the children who inhabit this Earth, he will send storms and tempests to try their endurance".

The Great Storm arrived and trees bent to the ground with the force of the wind and rain. Great shafts of light shot across the skies; the waves of the seas became frenzied and beat with tremendous force against the mighty walls which had been placed to hold back the waters. At the height of the storm a mighty rock threw itself upon the seashore, and as it settled on the sands the storm was hushed; the light again cast itself all around, the howling of the wind abated and the turbulent seas came to peace.

Through the years which passed over the land from this time, the stone still laid upon the sands, but every time there was a storm at the behest of The Lord of All Time because he was unhappy with the progress of his Earthlings, some of the stone came away and was washed out into the depths of the mighty seas. Much time passed and many, many storms came, and over the turning of the tides the Great Stone became much smaller, more polished by the pounding of the waters, more beautiful to gaze upon.

After the passing of many, many periods the Stone became much, much smaller, and during the time of a very Mighty Storm when the Lord became very angry, it broke into many fragments and these were washed away and journied to many shores and many lands. At this time most of the fragments had in their depth a wonderful peace, an essence of strength and healing for the mind. Many feet passed by but none heard the call saying: "I have come to you over the periods, I have been burnished by the mind of The Lord of All Time, have you no use for me?"

One day an Earth Spirit walked upon a shore. It was cold and the skies were dark. The Earth Spirit bent to pluck a little stone from the edge of the waters, and, feeling the warmth and peace within, held it and was pleasured. This one glanced down and saw a second little stone which matched the first and took this one also into their hand, and then spoke to the ocean which had become calm, and there on the far edge of the horizon the bright light of The Lord of All Time could be seen. They spoke: "My Lord I take these stones which you have sent; one I will keep always with me, and the other I will find a path to send it home to you as a token that here on this land you are not forgotten, and here on this land we work with endurance and resolve to bring your dreams to fruit."

Time passed and a friend of this one was assailed by a dread sickness which the Great Lord had sent to bring some thoughts for others to the minds of many. The finder of the stones gave one to this beautiful Earth Spirit, to be a bond between them until the sick one should return Home and surely it will be sent forth with him when the call comes. When the journey Home is completed it will be placed at the foot of the Crystal until its twin can join it, at which time the work of the Great Lord will be coming to fruit over all the dominions of the Earth.
